Modern Angels, Ancient Tensions: The Meaning Behind “Angels in Protest”

One of the most arresting images in Donald Veshaj’s “Polyphony” series is a scene that feels both biblical and disturbingly modern. In the print “Angels in Protest,” we see ethereal, winged figures but they are not the serene icons of Renaissance cathedrals. They are wearing gas masks, emerging through thick, suffocating clouds of smoke.

This work marks a pivot in Donald’s portfolio, where the “suspended time” of his studio practice meets the urgent, vibrating energy of the streets.

Inspired by the Streets

The inspiration for this piece stems from real-world event specifically, protests in Albania where the air was thick with tension and tear gas. Donald witnessed the chaos and felt a need to document not just the political event, but the spiritual toll of conflict.

By placing gas masks on angels, Donald explores a powerful juxtaposition:

• The Sacred vs. The Political: Angels represent our highest ideals purity, protection, and divine intervention. The gas mask represents the harsh reality of human struggle, surveillance, and the struggle for breath.
• The Silenced Prayer: A gas mask is a tool of survival, but it also muffles the voice. These angels are witnesses who cannot speak, reflecting the feeling of being unheard in a moment of social upheaval.

The Aggression of Drypoint

To capture the frantic energy of a protest, Donald utilized the Drypoint technique. Unlike the soft, controlled gradients of his mezzotint work, the lines here are “angry” and immediate.

• The Burr: The rough metal edges created by the needle hold a surplus of ink, creating deep, bleeding blacks that perfectly mimic the appearance of rising smoke and heavy shadows.
• The Raw Line: You can feel the speed of the artist’s hand in the strokes. There is no room for perfection in a protest, and there is no room for it in this print. The technical “imperfections” become a metaphor for the messiness of human resistance.

Beyond the Smoke

“Angels in Protest” asks us to consider who watches over us when things fall apart. Is sanctuary still possible in a world of gas masks and sirens?

Donald Veshaj doesn’t provide an easy answer. Instead, he offers a powerful visual witness. He reminds us that even in the darkest, most crowded moments of our history, there is a persistent, winged desire for freedom—even if it has to breathe through a filter.
