Mezzotint is a 17th-century intaglio printmaking technique known as the “black art” (manière noire) because it allows artists to create rich, velvety blacks and soft tonal gradations by working from dark to light. The process involves uniformly roughening a metal plate with a “rocker” to produce a deep black print, then scraping and burnishing it to create lighter tones.
