From Metal to Paper

Every print is a labor of precision. Whether it is the meditative preparation of a mezzotint plate or the raw, immediate engraving of drypoint on copper, the process is as vital as the final image. Each piece is an original handmade print, carrying unique tonal variations and a distinct tactile presence.

01
Preparing the Matrix

The process begins with a solid copper plate, where the surface is meticulously prepared—either through the exhaustive "rocking" of a mezzotint plate to create a uniform burr or the polishing of a plate for drypoint.

02
The Act of Engraving

Using specialized steel tools or diamond-tipped needles, the artist incises the image directly into the metal, creating physical grooves and raised edges that will later hold the ink.

03
Inking and Wiping

Ink is applied across the entire plate and then carefully wiped by hand using tarlatan cloth, leaving pigment only within the recessed lines and the velvety "burr" of the engravings.

04
The Hand-Pulled Press

The inked plate is placed on a heavy rolling press under dampened archival paper, where immense pressure transfers the soul of the metal onto the fiber, resulting in a unique, tactile original print.
