Light from Darkness: The Symbolic World of Donald Veshaj

For many, the name Donald Veshaj is synonymous with the high energy of the television screen. But away from the spotlight, a deeper, more meditative transformation has been taking place. In his latest work, Donald has traded the fast pace of media for the slow, physically demanding mastery of mezzotint and drypoint, emerging as a multidisciplinary artist dedicated to the concepts of memory, vulnerability, and “suspended time.”

The Shift to the Metal Plate

Printmaking is an art of patience. Unlike the immediacy of a digital sketch, mezzotint and drypoint require a physical struggle with metal. Donald’s recent series signify a “return to the craft,” where every line is a deliberate witness to his artistic intent.

1. “Heart as a Shield” – The Strength in Softness

In his Mezzotint series, Donald explores the paradoxical nature of protection. By reimagining natural defenses—replacing the shells of turtles and snails with anatomical human hearts—he challenges us to reconsider what it means to be safe.

Using the mezzotint technique, the images emerge from a “rocked” copper plate—a surface of total darkness—into soft, luminous gradients. It is a haunting metaphor for the series itself: the idea that light and resilience can only be found by moving through the deepest shadows.

2. “Polyphony” – A Visual Echo of Heritage

With his Drypoint collection, Donald turns his gaze toward the cultural pulse of Albania. The “Polyphony” series acts as a visual translation of traditional polyphonic songs.

  • Shepherds Over Generals: This piece captures the raw energy of folk resistance. The “burr” of the drypoint line—the rough, ink-catching edge created by the needle—mimics the layered, gritty voices of the singers, creating a visual rhythm that feels both ancient and immediate.

Beyond the Studio: “Heart Remains” in Vlora

In May 2025, Donald took his exploration of the “heart” into the public sphere with his first major installation, “Heart Remains,” in his hometown of Vlora.

The installation featured anatomical hearts frozen within blocks of ice, placed along the Lungomare. As the ice melted naturally under the sun, the hearts were slowly “released.” It was a simple yet profound gesture: an invitation to the public to “melt” their own emotional distances and rediscover empathy in an increasingly cold urban reality.

The Philosophy of “Suspended Time”

Whether it is the haunting gas masks in “Angels in Protest” or the quiet endurance of a turtle, Donald’s work is rooted in a single philosophy: the preservation of a moment. His practice is a search for stillness in a world that never stops moving.

“I didn’t build it with rules. I built it with feelings.” — Donald Veshaj on his installation work.

From Media to Masterpiece

The evolution of Donald Veshaj is a reminder that artists are not fixed points. By embracing the “beauty of the raw line” and the physically demanding world of intaglio printmaking, he has created a visual language that bridges the gap between Albanian tradition and modern introspection.

Collectors and admirers are no longer just watching a performer; they are witnessing a craftsman at the height of his discovery, carving his heart—quite literally—into the copper plates of time.
