Carving light out of total darkness. A deep exploration of modern resilience, structural vulnerability, and the meditative rigor of traditional, hand-pulled fine art printmaking.

In an era dominated by rapid digital filters and automated design, Donald Veshaj has shifted his practice toward the slowest, most physically demanding technique in printmaking history: Mezzotint.

The “Heart as a Shield” series performs a radical visual surgery on classic concepts of defense and biological armor. By isolating naturally resilient, slow-moving creatures—like the turtle and the snail—and replacing their calcified external shells with a pulsing, exposed anatomical heart, Donald introduces a challenging contemporary query: What happens when we choose to abandon our emotional armor?

Preparing a single mezzotint matrix requires dozens of hours of repetitive manual labor before a design can even be transferred to the metal. The entire copper plate is meticulously textured using a heavy, curved tool called a “rocker” until the surface is uniform with millions of tiny metal burrs meant to hold thick, velvety ink.

From this absolute darkness, the artist works entirely in reverse—using steel scrapers and burnishers to smooth out the metal, gently drawing out highlights and delicate midtones from the black void. This exhaustive process produces deep, smoky transitions and an organic internal glow that cannot be accurately replicated by any modern or digital alternative.

Artist’s Note: “I don’t build with rules; I build with feelings. My work is an invitation to stop moving, even for a second, and simply witness.” — Donald Veshaj
